Research policy

Toward the realization of a carbon-free society in 2050, research and development within the vertically divided academic system will not be possible. It is essential to establish an innovative theoretical system that can cross different energy conversion engineering systems of electrical system, mechanical dynamical system, and thermal energy system. Our research group has been exploring the structure of the logic and laws of phenomena for more than 50 years, and it is possible to unify system analysis with a circuit theory that is strongly systematized between different engineering systems as a common analysis structure. We have been the first in the world to show that by making the distribution amount and the position difference amount common, the power that is the product can form a conversion group as an invariant in energy conversion between systems.

Since the thermal energy system has an extremely complicated structure consisting of heat and flow phenomena that change its form in various ways, systematization has been left behind, but our research group has been able to propagate the flow energy to the thermal energy system. For the first time, we have shown that network analysis can be realized by clarifying the structure and adding a peculiar flow phenomenon due to blockage or gas-liquid separation to the network structure as a constraint condition for the flow volume. As a result, the analysis system for thermal energy systems has made great progress and can be directly linked to equipment development, and it is used for analysis of heat pumps and renewable energy utilization technologies that are being promoted worldwide due to their energy saving properties. It is.

In the future, we will strengthen the coupled analysis of electrical, mechanical dynamical, and thermal energy systems, and introduce AI, IoT, and IT technologies to establish digitization technology common to energy conversion engineering. .. "Hydrogen supply chain" that enables the realization of a future society through this utilization, "society centered on renewable energy", "safe living space that can protect humankind from viruses", "providing safe and secure food" We will develop a wide range of research and development from basic research that is indispensable for "the supply chain of food that can be made" to social implementation.

Integrated research system for environmental energy technology in Saito laboratory

Saito Laboratory has a laboratory on the Nishi-Waseda Campus to carry out basic research. In addition to this, we are also promoting activities as the Open Innovation Organization "Mathematical Energy Conversion Engineering Research Institute" and the Research Organization "Thermal Energy Conversion Engineering / Mathematics Fusion Research Institute". Please see the homepage for these. In order to develop these researches, we are conducting advanced research at Building 121 and comprehensive evaluation of environmental energy technology at Building 41 on the Kikuicho Campus. Off-campus, the Kobe City Manufacturing Center is conducting basic research on hydrogen, and the University of Indonesia is conducting energy system evaluations in Southeast Asia.

Educational policy

Seminar camp in Karuizawa

Many researchers from Japan and overseas are enrolled in Saito Laboratory, and they carry out many professional research activities including large-scale national professionals. In the laboratory, English is usually spoken, which contributes to improving students' English proficiency. By collaborating with such researchers, we aim to develop human resources who can become model researchers and engineers who can play an active role internationally in the future. Based on this policy, we are conducting the following activities.

Every Thursday 9: 00-12: 00 Research progress meeting
May Interim presentation
August Seminar camp in Karuizawa
October Interim presentation
January Final result presentation
February Graduation thesis / master's thesis presentation

In addition to this, many students participate in international conferences and conference presentations. We are also promoting exchanges with many universities and research institutes in Japan and overseas. For example, we are holding joint seminars with five universities around the world.
