"Designing a new human space that reconciles comfortable living with a decarbonized society."
This is the ultimate mission of the Saito Laboratory. By fusing five elements — architecture, energy, mechanical engineering, information and control, and human factors — we optimize space itself as a single, integrated system. We are pioneering, ahead of the rest of the world, the uncharted field of "Human Space Design Engineering."
We are boldly expanding the boundaries of mechanical engineering to pioneer, ahead of the rest of the world, an entirely new academic discipline: Human Space Design Engineering. Using the invisible phenomenon of "heat" as a common language, we unravel previously unknown phenomena and design every kind of space — from the microclimate inside clothing to next-generation mobility, future living environments, and even space stations.
Using design methods grounded in analogy and theory taught in our course "Analytical Design Exercises in Engineering," you will design complex human spaces as integrated systems.
A world-class suite of cyber-physical facilities worth roughly JPY 700 million awaits you, including our one-of-a-kind "Variable Thermal Environment Model Room."
In an international research environment that draws members from overseas, you can take on large-scale research together with colleagues from around the world. Our goal is to become an innovation hub in the spirit of the MIT Media Lab.
